What will I do as an Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteer?

You will make sure that books on the shelf that you are in charge of are in Dewey Decimal order and neatly arranged. Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteers will work in the children’s section of the library.

How much time will I spend as an Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteer?

A minimum of 1 hour every two weeks…but you can check your shelf more frequently if you want.

What are the requirements for becoming an Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteer?

You must be at least in 9^th grade, available to be trained by staff in Dewey Decimal organization, be comfortable lifting books and reaching the top and bottom shelves, and you must fill out an application at the library.

Jr. Book Reviewer grades 4-6
Teen Book Reviewer grades 7-12

Check out a book with a NEW Sticker on spine.
It can be a fiction or non-fiction or a Graphic Novel.

Your review should answer the following questions:
• What is the book about (theme as well as plot)?
• What kind of reader would like this book? What grade?
• What other books would you suggest for someone
who liked it? Are they already owned by the library?
• Is the cover any good (i.e. would it attract readers?)

On a scale of 1-5, how popular do you think the book will be?
1 - No one will want to read it except for assignments.
2 – Only for person who has special interest in subject matter
3 – Will appeal to reader if recommended
4 – Will have general appeal
5 – Everyone will be in a rush to read it.

Inheritance by Christopher Paolini

Have you been waiting for the final installment of the Inheritance Cycle? Well the wait is almost over. The release date is November 8th. As of now, you can place a hold on the book, but only through a librarian.

While you are waiting, listen to a podcast of Christopher Paolini and George R.R. Martin from Comic Con.

These are our ongoing opportunities, but occasionally, we have other small various tasks that need to be done. You must make arrangements to volunteer. Please do not show up expecting to be able to do hours on the spot. Thank you.

Teen Advisory Board
Help plan teen programs and make suggestions for the collection. Make your opinion count as you earn community service hours. Meets once a month on Friday from 3:30-4:30.

Teen Tech Tutor for Seniors Citizens
The Library is looking for teens to tutor Seniors on cell phones, using email, downloading pictures, blogs, Twitter and Facebook. Help others while earning community services hours. We are looking to host this program 1 or 2 times a month.

Summer Reading Program
During the children’s summer reading program, we are seeking assistants for Children’s programs. You might be preparing crafts, working with children or giving out prizes/stickers to children who participate in the reading club.

Shelf Reader
(Children’s and Adult sections) Methodically read the spine labels of books on the shelves in a designated area, to make sure they are alphabetized or in numerical order. Shelf readers help keep our books in good order, so patrons can find things easily. This job requires attention to detail, and skill at alphabetizing (are you good at looking up words in the dictionary?) and sequencing. This job also requires someone to offer their time at least once a week on a regular basis, even if just for an hour or so.
